Sightings

Sunday October 9

Awesome, awesome day today!!  We left the dock under blue skies, flat calm water, and fantastic views!  We stopped to see some Stellar sealions basking in the sun on Mittlenatch Island and came across a pod of Dall's porpoises.  Lots of seals and bald eagles around too.  Up the Orford River, we spent our time between towers 4 and 5 and saw a total of 10 Grizzlies!!!  We saw several large males, a mama bear and her two cubs, and plenty of other bears.  It was just amazing!  They were out in perfect sight both up close and further down the river.  Tons of photo opportunities as these bears hunted, caught fish, and walked about.  We barely went 5 minutes without seeing anything!  Our time on land quickly passed but everyone was thrilled with the experience.  On the way back we spotted a black bear on Michelle Pfeiffer's holiday property and then enjoyed a relaxing cruise back to Campbell River as the sun was setting.  Great Day!!!

Saturday October 8

That humpback from yesterday was still hanging around today!  We saw him along with the familiar stellar sealions, harbour seals, and bald eagles.  We then got to spend time with 5 Grizzlies on land, which is always a treat!  It was a fun trip for everyone!!

Friday October 7

Wow, our Grizzly Expedition was more like a whale watch/bear tour today!  On our way over to Bute Inlet, we saw 5 transients and 1 humpback who amazed us with 2 very nice breaches!!  We then saw Dall's porpoises, stellar sealions, harbour seals, bald eagles, and 4 Grizzlies!  All in all, a superb day!

Wednesday October 5

Our lucky guests saw 8 transients on their way to Bute Inlet today!!  The Resident orcas have more or less moved on but the Transients still come by every now and then.  It's hit or miss whether we see them but today was definitely a hit!!  We then saw harbour porpoises, stellar sealions, harbour seals, bald eagles, and 6 Grizzlies!  Awesome day!

Pacific white-sided dolphins
Harbour porpoises
Stellar sealions

Monday October 3

From here on out it's just our Grizzly Expeditions left so all the sightings are from what we've seen on the way to and from Bute Inlet, including the bears!  Today was a plentiful day with pacific white-sided dolphins, harbour porpoises, stellar sealions, harbour seals, many eagles, and 3 grizzly bears!

Sunday October 2

Grizzly Trip

Today was a great day for sightings!  Once at the Orford/Elgard Rivers (after a careful trip dodging the debris in the water!), we managed to spot 4 bears, although they were somewhat tucked into the river bank.  After watching them for a bit, a large mother bear and her 2 year old cub came out and spent 30 minutes in front of us, fishing off logs.  We thoroughly enjoyed watching them as they dipped down from the logs to catch the fish and then happily munched away.  Great photo opportunities!!  On our way back we saw multiple Stellar sealions around Jimmy Judd Island.  Everyone left happy and glad that the weather cooperated for us.

Saturday October 1

Whale Watch

It was a quiet day on the water regards to whales today, the northern residents left 'town' so to speak the day before the large storm last week and havn't been seen since, and the Transients are around but being Transients, are very elusive indeed. So we headed out regardless and had a great day nonetheless. We saw 2 seperate groups of Steller Sealions, harbour seals, lots and lots of Dall's porpoise who proved to be very interactive , harbour porpoise and black bears so all in all for wildlife it was a good day.
